Why are so many websites shit?
We’ve all been part of the online world long enough to find it hard to remember it being any other way? 99% of the time, my first point of research for anything is Google, and for the other 1% I’ve got Siri.
When I was at school, we were taught the importance of your first impression. The first 7 seconds are the most important. And in order to create a good first impression there were a few key rules:
- Smile, keep eye contact while introducing yourself
- Speak clearly, don’t slouch
- Look and dress smartly
That’s very basic stuff but it’s how it works – right?
We all might think that we don’t judge a book by its cover, but we do. I don’t think I’ve bought a book without judging the cover. If it looks rubbish I ain’t buying it.
Maybe that's too shallow? But the truth is we’re a bunch of headline readers. There is so much information out there to consume, how else do we pick and choose?
There are so many companies and organisations out there that you can plainly see give very little consideration to the impression their website creates. I find that strange and frustrating. Would you leave your shop front or office window in such an unloved condition?
I’m not saying you need to spend a gazillion dollars on the design, a design is a subjective thing. What I am saying is, put a little thought and effort in.
We need to go back to school for the first impressions list of rules:
- Is your website introducing who you are?
- Is it clear and concise?
- Does it look smart and is it tailored to your audience?
If your business is reliant on attention whether you are a plumber with a ‘one pager’ or a multi-faceted organisation with a complex online infrastructure – your website matters!
